Led by Literacy Teacher on Special Assignment Annette Licata, the event aimed to foster curiosity in reading and nurture literacy as a shared family activity. Ms. Licata started the event by reading the book “Not a Box” to the students and their families. Following the reading, over 35 students and their families ignited their imagination to create an array of projects from cardboard boxes, including castles, robots, cars, machines, and more.
“We would like to thank the entire community, our families, volunteers, and staff who came out to support our first literacy event this school year,” Ms. Licata said. “We look forward to seeing everyone at the next literacy event.”
Ms. Licata has been instrumental in spearheading family literacy events at De Anza Elementary. The event received positive feedback from parents, with one parent commenting, “My student had lots of fun. Love these kinds of events, hopefully, there’s more soon. Thank you.”
De Anza Elementary, home of the Dragons, is known for its strong commitment to parent engagement, led by Principal Caroline K. Lau. The school, which celebrated its first-ever platinum PBIS award last year, continues to prioritize events that connect families and enhance collaborative student achievement.
