The field at De Anza Elementary School welcomed over 200 students to enjoy a sunny day flying kites as a reward for their good behavior. The event was part of the school's Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) incentive program. Students from TK through 5th grade, staff, families, and community members came together for a fun-filled day. Special guests included the Mayor of Baldwin Park Emmanuel J. Estrada, and BPUSD Superintendent Froilan N. Mendoza.
Kites of different colors, designs, and characters could be seen soaring across the Dragons’ field. Students earned the opportunity to participate by turning in their earned PBIS “Dragon Dollars,” providing not only a reward but also teaching them money management skills.
Students at De Anza Elementary can earn “Dragon Dollars” from staff when they are seen demonstrating Safety, Integrity, Respect, and Responsibility (SIRR). Students can ‘buy’ tickets to a variety of SIRR Events throughout the school year including: Chalk Walk, Extra Recess, Game Day, Art Day, Kite Day, Bubble Day, and a Luau. They also enter into daily prize opportunity drawings.
“Our students love the challenge of earning Dragon Dollars! We continue to teach and review behavior expectations as well as recognize students who meet them with a variety of incentives,” De Anza Elementary Principal Caroline Kwak Lau said.
De Anza Elementary recently earned a 2022-2023 Platinum Award from the PBIS Coalition for creating and nurturing positive campus cultures. Ranking up from their previous Gold award, this is the first Platinum award for a school in the Baldwin Park Unified School District.
De Anza Elementary is now enrolling for the 2024-25 school year!
